The Air I Breath
Who would have thought that I would say a movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar was really good. No I'm not a Buffy fan. But, I can't say I haven't watched a show or two. And, come on, Brendan Fraser? The Mummy? Yeah, I liked that movie too, but a movie like this? Actually made me think.
Well, keep in mind, Forest Whitaker was in this movie too. I pretty small part, at least in terms of length, but he set up the movie. It was his part that kept me watching and wanting to see how everything tied together. Although the concept was not new -- it was very Traffic'ess in the way it told its story. It was moving.
What moved me? It was Whitaker's intro to the movie. He talks about how he envied all those around him who didn't question their world. Who accepted it for what it was. Well, that's wrong. Acceptance assumes that I am aware of my reality. He envied those who were ignorant of the futility of the life that they live. Processed through the mass production lines of education, socialization, and installed in as another cog of the great economy machine. Churning out widgets and ideas. So that other like minded cogs and consume and create more cogs, feeding in to the great machine. Growing, assimilating, exploiting, using and throwing away.
Whoa! Way of the topic of the actual movie. But that's the only reason why I can say I liked the movie. Yeah, the violence was shocking. Yeah the characters were really well developed and I was able to relate to each of the characters, including the despicable, shady, mobster guys. They all had motivations and personalities that I can see in myself. That's scary. But it's true.
